is there a need for data interpretation skills?

Hello Netlife members, I am working on a project idea and would like to know... is there a need/desire to train your interpreters on scientific literacy skills like understanding quantitative data tables, reading journal articles, and translating current research to a public audience? Are these things that your floor staff would like to know how to do? See More

Hi Andrea, Congratulations on setting up another wonderful ning site! Is it ok if I recommend and invite people to join this group from other science centres in the UK? I have a couple of people in mind who i think that would be really useful for.

We are all very excited about the exchange but are trying to remain composed until we have definite conformation from COSI! If all goes ahead it will be amazing to have international visitors with us again, i can't wait.

I am going to talk to the enablers next week about helping you with your research so hopefully you will have tw0 enthusiastic communicators to answer al your insightful questions.

If there is anything else we can help you with, just drop me a line.

Thanks Andrea. I'm looking foward to being part this site. Thansk for setting it up. I won't be able to join the chat because I'll be at NISE Network meetings in Minnesota on the 15th of June. But I'll invite David Perry to the network and hope that he can sit in on the chat. He is now our manager of in-museum educators and I've been keeping him in the loop about the Friday pre-ASTC session and more. (Very good session last year). Marilyn

Hi Andrea,
In our facilitation testing the evaluation team was looking for math talk in four categories: Features, Strategies, Specific Relationships and General Relationships. I will attempt to attach a document that defines those categories and gives a few examples from one exhibit component. Gestures we've been thinking about more recently. We tested an exhibit that wasn't originally intended for facilitation and its layout made dialog a bit more difficult. As a result we started noticing more gestures that we thought indicated mathematical thinking.
